Babes with Babies is a super maternity brand that I’ve been lucky enough to work with during this pregnancy, and I had a really hard time choosing what I wanted to try out. There are so many dresses on this site (and you know how I like a dress!) and so many wonderful designs that are just made for the changing shape that it really was a struggle to choose. I ended up with three choices that needed to be narrowed down to just one, and the lovely Emily at Babes with Babies was a wonderful help. She knows the clothes inside out and was able to advise based on my body shape and needs. In the end I went for The Magic Dress, a breastfeeding wrap dress. The reason I went for this is because I knew these clothes were something a little bit special. I wanted a dress that I could wear in the cooler months of my pregnancy, and one that would see me through Winter breastfeeding the baby too. And I’m so glad I did because the dress has already proven to be a core staple in my wardrobe! Here are my thoughts on maternity wear from Babes with Babies.
First of all, it’s highly worth mentioning the wonderful service and packaging that the dress itself came in. Signed for delivery within one or two days after ordering, and when I opened the parcel, I was greeted with this beautiful ribboned box. Inside, the dress was nestled in delicate tissue paper, smelling beautiful thanks to a dozen scattered rose buds. Stunning. Little touches like this made me so excited to open the package and try my dress on!
The Magic Dress
The only disappointment I had on my first try of this dress was that it was evening and I had nowhere to go and nothing to do, apart from bathe the kids and put them to bed! The dress immediately made me feel special, and I couldn’t wait to share a snap on Instagram! Here is the photo:
I hope you can see from this picture just how flattering this dress really is. It’s made from a wonderfully soft, stretchy fabric that Babes with Babies describes as ‘magic’ and there is a reason for that! It seems to skim over the wobbly bits that I’m always aware of, and simply makes them disappear! And the fact that it is a wrap dress means you can tie it as loosely or as tightly as you wish, making it perfect for your changing shape throughout pregnancy.
What I love about the dress
The colour. Yes, it’s black but black is a great colour for a dress. You can team it with any colour you like- for example a chunky multi coloured beaded necklace and yellow boots. Why not? A classic black dress never goes out of style and it’s a colour that’s known to shape the silhouette and give an overall sleeker appearance. That’ll do for me!
I love the fact that this dress is a little different. I love that you can wear a chunky necklace, a delicate necklace, or leave the neck bare. I love that smaller busted ladies don’t need to pin it to stop it from gaping because you an simply cross the fabric where you need it to be and tie it as tightly as you need. Same goes for larger busted ladies I guess. And when baby arrives, this collar means that I can breastfeed easily and discreetly too, by simply loosening the tie a little, without losing the overall effect of the dress. The collar also means that this makes a perfect work dress because it looks smart; alternatively I can wear this dress with tights and boots on cold days, or simple flats/ medium heels for nights out.
I cannot tell you how flattering the shape of this dress is. And here it’s worth saying that I love the fabric too. Both the cut of the dress and the fabric used means that it really envelopes your body and accentuates the curves in such a lovely way. It doesn’t highlight the bumps and bits you maybe don’t like and it has the ability to do just what you ask it. What I mean by that is that when you wrap the dress, you pull the tie through a small hole at the opposite side, then around the body and tie in the front. This means that YOU control the overall effect. If you tie loosely, you have a looser dress that skims over your body and bump and sits comfortably on the body. If you pull tighter, and make the neckline higher, you get a sleeker, more ‘body con’ effect that emphasises your curves and bump. Personally, this is the style I prefer but I like knowing that I can relax the tie if I want to. Both ways to wear the dress are highly comfortable, by the way!
The fact it’s not just for nine months. One of the hardest things about spending a little more on maternity clothes (and the range at Babes with Babies is a little more than many would consider forking out, especially when compared to high street labels) is knowing that you are not likely to be wearing them for very long. And who knows if there really will be another pregnancy after this one? Besides the fact that the clothes are so beautiful that you don’t want to relegate them to a box when you’re done with them! Which is why I was so thrilled with my choice, because it’s a dress that I can wear well beyond pregnancy. The style means that it does not look like a maternity dress at all, nor a nursing dress for that matter. So yes, I will be wearing this one for years to come. It’s a classic design, classic colour and an exqisitely made dress that deserves to be a major part of my wardrobe- and it already is!
I wore The Magic Dress for this week’s bump update:
and I already have it marked as my going home dress from hospital when baby arrives. It is so easy to wear, easy to style and perfectly comfortable that there can be no other choice!
Babes with Babies are a brand that you don’t want to miss during your pregnancy. If you buy one or two pieces from the collection, you will not be disappointed. What you will have is months and months (maybe years!) of pleasure instead! The clothes are truly designed with love, made with care and thoughtfully selected to ensure that customers are not only satisfied with both the service and their purchases, but so that they can continue to love their changing shape throughout pregnancy. For me, this is essential. I’ve written before about how hard I find it to have little control over how my body changes as the baby grows, and to find clothes that fit well and help to boost self confidence is such a wonderful thing. The Magic Dress, from the moment I opened it, has been the one staple dress that I have come to rely on to make me feel good about myself whenever I wear it. And that is worth every penny to me.
Here are my top picks for Autumn/ Winter from the range at Babes with Babies.
