Recently we were sent a Russell the dream sheepdog from Sweet Dreamers, the creators of the iconic Ewan the dream sheep. The Toddler has had a Ewan since she was very small, so we knew already how fab Russell was likely to be. And we weren’t disappointed! Since The Toddler moved from a cot to a bed, she’s had a few unsettled nights where she’s fallen onto the floor or woken with no covers on so the timing of Russell was perfect! This is the story of Bella and Russell…
A cuddly companion
The Toddler has inherited her siblings’ love of cuddly toys, so the minute she saw Russell she was in love! Nicknamed ‘My Purple Dog’, Russell has pretty much been by The Toddler’s side since he arrived and when he’s not he sits happily at the end of here bed. Because the toy is soft and cuddly, it makes a wonderful sleeping buddy too, even without batteries for the sounds and lights.
As a sleep aid
The real reason why Russell is such a wonderful bedtime companion is all down to the family traits he shares with Ewan. The Toddler spent many an evening being lulled to sleep by the soft sounds that drifted from Ewan, and was comforted by the soft lighting too. Russell the dream sheepdog is not aimed at babies, however, it is for ‘big girls’. And big girls need a little help getting to sleep sometimes too.
When activated, Russell’s tummy glows green and blue, colours known to calm and relax. Sweet Dreamers say:
“Russell’s blue and green colour therapy light show is unique. The combination of these 2 sleep inducing colours has been proven to help the body release soothing and calming hormones thereby triggering sleep. With the light show lasting a full 30 minutes, it’s almost certainly long enough to help settle even the most restless toddler!”
The Toddler has loved watching the lights on Russell’s tummy at bedtime and we’ve really noticed a difference on evenings where she’s found it more difficult to settle. BUT the best is yet to come…
Record your own voice
The best thing about Ewan is that he emits white noise and music that helps baby to settle off to sleep. Russell also has a little speaker inserted under his tummy, that also emits sounds to soothe little ones at bedtime. The only difference is that you can record your own voice!
We LOVE this feature so much. At first the children found it hilarious, and since I’m not much of a singer my renditions of lullabies resulted in much hilarity. See our clip below for an example of my dulcet tones…
Since The Toddler didn’t seen too enamoured with my singing (!) we decided to record short bedtime stories instead and this works a treat! It’s such a wonderful idea for little ones that struggle to settle at night. And four minutes of recording time means that you can record a short story or rhyme for your little one that is just repeated throughout the 32 minute light show. Brilliant!
Russell the dream sheepdog is a lovely bedtime companion for The Toddler. We love that we can record short stories for her and we know that the night light feature is appreciated now that she is more aware of being on her own in the dark. We’re lucky that’s she always been a good sleeper, but as she gets older she does have more unsettled occasions now and then. Russell is the best method we’ve found to re-settle her when we need to- so it’s a HUGE thumbs up from us!
Russell the dream sheepdog is available to buy from Sweet Dreamers for £34.99 and is suitable for children aged 18 months and older. It requires 3 AA batteries and has no pre-recorded sounds. We were sent a Russell for review purposes only and all opinions are my own.
