To the mother who is yet to be,
You are about to begin something amazing. Please remember that you don’t need to be a yes person. Sometimes YOU will know best instead. That test, that examination, that measurement. You can say no.
No to an invasive internal that leaves you frightened, confused or disappointed.
No to lying prone on a bed with a monitor attached for hours on end.
No to a repeat c-section simply because you had one before.
Your body is amazing, and your mind even more so. Use it. Read. Research. Be strong, and stay strong.
These are words I have come to know as the truth. Words I wish I’d been able to carry to throughout my own pregnancies. Words that carry a strength that seeps through to my soul. I never had this strength for me, but I want you to have it for you.
Listen to your body. Listen to the doctors too. Mostly they will want what is best for you, but sometimes they’ll need a little guidance from you. So guide your team towards an experience that you are in control of.
You don’t need to say yes; sometimes it’s ok to. But most of all, remember this.
Respect your body. Treat it with kindness and love it’s imperfections. When the time really comes, it will know what to do.
Listen to your baby. Know the rhythm and be the best advocate you can be.
Make your choice. Let yourself be guided, supported and respected. Stand up for the things that you know are true. Surround yourself with kindred spirits and allow only those who believe to have any influence over your decisions.
And most of all, love your pregnancy. Place your hand on your belly each day, and wait. Feel the kicks and the rolls and wait. Close your eyes and wait.
You are about to begin something amazing.
