We are a family of book lovers, and ever since the children were all really tiny we have made time for a story at the end of the day. Its our special time to sit together and enjoy a story; enjoy a snuggle after a busy day. But reading at bedtime is about so much more too. It helps to develop vocabulary, communication skills, imaginative play and much much more. I’m a firm believer that children are never too old to be read aloud to, and this is one reason why Penguin audiobooks are going to make such fantastic gifts for kids this Christmas.
We were asked if we’d like to try a selection of audiobooks on CD, and I asked the children which books they’d like to try. We chose Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and other Stories, The Chronicles of Narnia and The Christmasaurus. If I’m honest, I already knew that the children would enjoy them. I love books on CDs and have always ensured there are plenty around the house for the children to dip into when they want some quiet time. I especially love books on CDs for early readers as they can use the books to read along and enjoy the wonder of story telling often by the author themselves. The Roadl Dahl audiobook CD is read by the man himself, which was hugely impressive to Luka!
As a teacher I always had a little CD player and a selection of audiobooks in my reading corner, along with as many headphones as I could find! For children who are not yet confident readers, or why just want to sit back and listen, this was always such a popular area of the room. And while Luka is now a very proficient reader himself, there is still such magic in being told a story. Being immersed in fantasy worlds, and being able to just enjoy without aching to decipher tricky words.
Penguin say that they “want everyone to be reminded of the wonderful experience listening to audiobooks can create,” and I have to say that this is the number one reason why these will be top of the gift list this Christmas. The aim is not to replace the daily bedtime story, the closeness of sitting together as a family and reading a favourite book. The aim is to instead create further ways to expand the children’s love of books and reading. Providing another way for them to enjoy the wonders of story telling and adventure. To foster and nurture a genuine love of books, reading, and literature in general.
Our verdict? Of course we LOVE the audiobooks we’ve been sent and the children have barely stopped listening since they arrived. In the house, in the car, upstairs in bed. We are still reading together, but they love that they can pick up a book themselves and listen to it being read aloud even when I’m busy with other things.
